Providing your newly hatched chicks with the right heat can make all the difference. If the preferred option for brooding chicks is a hanging lamp, then the heat emitters and infra-red lamps are a good choice.It is well known that prolonged light can disrupt growth rates and damage eyes of developing chicks as well as causing restlessness which can also lead to pecking issues in chicks. If your preferred option is to have some light available, we now stock high quality 250 watts tempered (Hardened) glass Infra-Red lamps. Infra-red will still emit a gentle red glow which is proven to be less damaging to eyes than prolonged exposure to white light. (These are commonly seen in restaurants keeping food warm) This will also reduce the risks associated with restlessness still allowing growing chicks to rest without the interruption of bright light.Note: These heat lamps produce an intense heat, therefore it is important a good quality ceramic lamp holder is used at all times. Suitable to use in the heavy-duty heat lamp set or in the ceramic bulb holders.
For those that prefer no light (and no glass), we recommend the ceramic heat emitters. These do a fantastic job of radiating heat and giving the chicks the most natural way of growing. We have found chicks raised under radiant heat grow well, happy and fast.
Too many mice running around?
This double-entry mouse trap is low-line so can sit under furniture or out of sight. There is an entry each side. As the mouse walks in the entry the floor drops down and lets it through. The floor then rises up again preventing escape. The trap is all galvanised but the top is clear plastic. This serves to encourage other mice in once one is trapped. (Mice like to socialise in small places.) It also allows a view of bait, and allows you to see when it needs emptying. Lid opens for baiting and removal of mice.

We placed Snowy's box in her hutch with some hay inside the kindling box and plenty just outside. She got very busy building her nest hopping in with mouthfuls of hay and lining her nest in preparation for the kits. Our kindling boxes are made of untreated plywood with wire mesh on the base and made to the right dimensions. We have a lift up hinged lid which works well give the doe security.

The drinker works on a similar principle to nipple drinkers, although is designed for use specifically for poultry and game (not rabbits or mischievous parrots that like to chew).

Set-up Instructions: Unscrew the glass bottle and fill it with water, sugar water or Topflite Wild Bird Nectar mix. Screw into the base firmly but gently. Avoid over-tightening the bottle in the feeder base thread. The best ratio for feeding is one part sugar or Topflite Wild Bird Nectar to four parts water. Throw out any liquid not consumed after 3 days to avoid it fermenting. Dirty bird feeders are dangerous to bird populations as they can spread pathogens: thoroughly clean the feeder with gentle soap and warm water before every refill, or run it through the dishwasher.
Feeding Guide: Place the feeder high and out of predators’ reach but close to native trees and shrubs (where possible)—place it near other wild bird food sources. Larger native birds are more likely to visit a feeder already in use by their smaller feathered friends. Where possible, plant native shrubs as long-term sources of natural nectar and berries.

Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does nectar in bird feeders go stale or ferment?Yes, it does. While we humans are partial to the odd fermented beverage, old sugar water or nectar is not good for birds. Leftover nectar or sugar water should be drained from the feeder after 2 - 3 days, and the feeder should be thoroughly cleaned to prevent bacterial growth.
2) Should I use white or brown sugar for feeding native birds?We recommend white or raw sugar. There is no scientific consensus that brown sugar offers benefits over and above white sugar, and equally, there’s no evidence it does any harm. We use raw sugar in our Wild Bird Nectar because it’s minimally processed and provides the golden colour that we know helps birds to locate a food source.
3) What ratio of sugar to water should I use in my nectar feeder?Manaaki Whenua and other researchers recommend a sugar concentration of around 20% (one cup of sugar per litre of water) This mimics the sugar concentration of natural plant nectar consumed by New Zealand nectar-sipping birds.
