Control lice on your poultry by sprinkling Poultry Lice Powder around the vent, under the wings and around the neck hackles, repeat treatment in seven days. It may be necessary to re-dose for severe infections. It is recommended that Poultry Lice Powder is used regularly toprevent Lice from re-establishing themselves on your birds. Yes, we recommend giving shell grit to your hens!
We feed out Weston Layer pellets to our laying birds and the soluble calcium levels in this commercial feed are adequate for eggs production with sound shells. However for those birds that are in enclosed runs and do not have access to large areas of free-range we provide shell grit separately. Shell grit has 3 benefits over the soluble limestone they add in the feed.
The hard shell bits act as teeth in the gizzard to assist in grinding up the feed and aids digestion.
The intake of calcium from the shells helps strengthen the shell of the chicken eggs.
Plus trace elements from the sea will be beneficial to their diet
At Appletons we fill a small pot planter (or an old pottery dish with a hole in it) secured by a wire stake in the ground (so the birds don't knock it over!) with our fine shell grit. Don't forget to line it with some weed mat to contain the grit so it does not all wash out!

Instructions: To make 1 litre of Poultry Shield add 200ml of Poultry Shield concentrate to 800ml water. To clean, sanitise and odour neutralise your coop: Remove old bedding and excess litter. Spray interior areas and equipment with Poultry Shield solution. Pay particular attention to the roof structure, joints, cracks, crevices and perches. Leave to soak for one hour and wash/brush clean if necessary. - Protect your water supply. Rinse out drinkers weekly with Poultry Shield solution.

Step-by-Step Humane Use of a Dispatch Cone
1) Prepare
Equipment: sharp killing knife (at least 12–15 cm, double-sided if possible), very clean, disinfected.
Cone: mounted at a comfortable working height.
Optional but best practice: poultry stunner (electric or percussive).
Have a bucket/tray beneath for blood collection.
Keep the environment quiet and calm (away from other birds if possible).
2) Catch & Handle Gently
Approach calmly, hold the bird firmly but gently.
Support wings against the body to prevent flapping.
Avoid chasing birds, as this causes stress.
3) Place in the Cone
Insert the bird head first into the cone.
The cone should be snug so the bird cannot turn or flap.
The head and neck should extend out of the bottom.
4) Stun (Preferred Method)
If you have a stunner, apply it now:
Electric: electrodes applied to both sides of the head (follow device instructions).
Percussive: a rapid blow to the head, causing instant unconsciousness.
Confirm unconsciousness (no blinking when the corner of the eye is touched, no righting reflex).
⚠️ If no stunner is available, you must cut swiftly and very cleanly (step 5).
5) Neck Cut
Use the sharp knife to make a deep, firm cut just behind the jawbone, across both sides of the neck.
Aim to sever both carotid arteries and jugular veins in one clean stroke.
Avoid cutting the spine or decapitating — bleeding is more effective and humane when vessels are cut.
6) Allow to Bleed Out
Keep the bird in the cone while it bleeds.
Reflex flapping is normal, but the bird should be unconscious if cut/stunned correctly.
Time to death is usually under 60 seconds.
7) Confirm Death
Before removing from the cone, check:
No rhythmic breathing.
No blink reflex when touching the eye.
No heartbeat (may be hard to feel, but absence of breathing + reflex = safe).
8) Aftercare
Dispose of blood and offal hygienically (MPI requires this).
Clean and disinfect equipment after each use.
✅ This method is considered the most humane way for home kill poultry in NZ when a cone is used.
✅ SPCA recommends always stunning first, but if not possible, the cut must be rapid and precise.

Nettex Poultry Vit Boost Tonic is a complementary supplement formulated specifically for chickens that supplies essential vitamins to support health, growth and vitality all year round through the drinking water.
Developed to help support chicken overall health, particularly in times of stress such as moulting, laying, heat stress, mite infestation, illness or during the introduction new birds to the flock.
Supports maintenance of peak egg production and chicken health.
Contains seaweed for egg quality and yolk colour.
Contains Biotin to help maintain healthy skin and feathers and supports feather regrowth following moulting.

HOW TO USE.
SHAKE WELL BEFORE USE
Do not use undiluted.
Maintenance: Add Poultry Vit Boost Tonic to the birds’ water at a rate of 5ml to 4.5ltrs of water for 5 days once a month.
During periods of stress: Feed at a rate of 5ml to 1ltr of drinking water for 5 days once a month.
Make up fresh solution daily
Antiseptic spray for wounds on poultry.
Nettex Would Spray is an antiseptic aerosol spray designed for easy application to wounds on pets and poultry. Many poultry wounds are caused by pecks, spurs, or claws, which can introduce germs. Nettex Wound Spray is a highly effective cleanser with powerful antibacterial action, specifically formulated to treat superficial wounds and abrasions on chickens. It works quickly to kill bacteria and prevent infection.
It can also be used to treat problems like bumblefoot in chickens or issues caused by pecking.
A must-have in any poultry first-aid kit!
Antibacterial – providing effective protection from the risk of bacterial infection.
Leaves a violet coloured residue when applied to indicate that the affected area has been covered and to disguise the appearance of blood, to help prevent pecking or bullying. An essential tool for minor wound management.

HOW TO USE
Separate the injured bird from others to avoid potential cannibalism.
Clean wound and spray area from about 15cm (6”).
Repeat daily or as necessary.
Do not use on large open wounds that may require stitching or hydrogel bandaging.
We recommend using gloves during application as any purple spray will also stain your skin.
At Appletons we like having wound spray on hand to treat any wounds or assist with feather-pecking. The violet colouring masks the colour of blood and the spray does an excellent job of healing the wound fast.
Very effective for treating poultry lice.
Used with great results in poultry circles as a reliable treatment for most internal and external parasites. Effective on external parasites ie: lice and scaly leg mite but will also kill any red mites that try to suck off your chicken.
This is long-lasting endectocide and is applied directly to the skin of the bird. It is approved for use on other farm animals but has not been officially approved for use on poultry hence the recommended 14 day withholding period for eggs (and 63 in NZ for meat).
This little bottle will treat a good number of birds. Approximately 60 treatments. This has been worked out for treating 60 brown shavers that weigh 2.5kg each. Dosage rate is 0.1ml per 1kg live body weight.
The active ingredient is Moxidectin.
Now available in a dropper bottle with nozzle and cap for handy dosing.
Helpful Notes.What are you treating your birds for? Worms? If you are treating for internal parasites, we recommend following up treatment within the prepatent period of the particular worm you are treating for. We have a great blog on worming, which you may find helpful (link here). If your hens are laying best to use a product that has no withholding period like Flubenol.Lice?If you are treating for external parasites: eg. lice then we recommend that a one-off treatment is usually only necessary. We also advise checking again after a couple of weeks to make sure the louse infestation has gone. If not, then best to repeat. We generally inspect (physical health check) our birds 2 to 4 times a year (usually when the seasons change) and treat them accordingly for lice. We find the pour on drench works brilliantly for lice control. Poison. Keep away from children.
