Red mites reproduce rapidly. These nasty bugs don’t live on your chickens but hide in the framework of your coop, perches and nest boxes, only coming out at night to feed on the blood of your birds. Yes, we recommend giving shell grit to your hens!
We feed out Weston Layer pellets to our laying birds and the soluble calcium levels in this commercial feed are adequate for eggs production with sound shells. However for those birds that are in enclosed runs and do not have access to large areas of free-range we provide shell grit separately. Shell grit has 3 benefits over the soluble limestone they add in the feed.
The hard shell bits act as teeth in the gizzard to assist in grinding up the feed and aids digestion.
The intake of calcium from the shells helps strengthen the shell of the chicken eggs.
Plus trace elements from the sea will be beneficial to their diet
At Appletons we fill a small pot planter (or an old pottery dish with a hole in it) secured by a wire stake in the ground (so the birds don't knock it over!) with our fine shell grit. Don't forget to line it with some weed mat to contain the grit so it does not all wash out!

Instructions: To make 1 litre of Poultry Shield add 200ml of Poultry Shield concentrate to 800ml water. To clean, sanitise and odour neutralise your coop: Remove old bedding and excess litter. Leave to soak for one hour and wash/brush clean if necessary. - Protect your water supply. Rinse out drinkers weekly with Poultry Shield solution.

Nettex Would Spray is an antiseptic aerosol spray designed for easy application to wounds on pets and poultry. Many poultry wounds are caused by pecks, spurs, or claws, which can introduce germs. Nettex Wound Spray is a highly effective cleanser with powerful antibacterial action, specifically formulated to treat superficial wounds and abrasions on chickens. It works quickly to kill bacteria and prevent infection.
It can also be used to treat problems like bumblefoot in chickens or issues caused by pecking.
A must-have in any poultry first-aid kit!

HOW TO USE
Separate the injured bird from others to avoid potential cannibalism.
Clean wound and spray area from about 15cm (6”).
Repeat daily or as necessary.
Do not use on large open wounds that may require stitching or hydrogel bandaging.
We recommend using gloves during application as any purple spray will also stain your skin.
At Appletons we like having wound spray on hand to treat any wounds or assist with feather-pecking. The violet colouring masks the colour of blood and the spray does an excellent job of healing the wound fast.
Very effective for treating poultry lice.
Used with great results in poultry circles as a reliable treatment for most internal and external parasites. Effective on external parasites ie: lice and scaly leg mite but will also kill any red mites that try to suck off your chicken.
This is long-lasting endectocide and is applied directly to the skin of the bird. It is approved for use on other farm animals but has not been officially approved for use on poultry hence the recommended 14-day withholding period for eggs and meat. This little bottle will treat a good number of birds. (Approximately 100 treatments if applied correctly.)

Helpful Notes.What are you treating your birds for? Worms? If you are treating for internal parasites we recommend following up treatment within the prepatent period of the particular worm you are treating for. We have a great blog on worming which you may find helpful (link here). If your hens are laying best to use a product that has no withholding period like Flubenol.Lice?If you are treating for external parasites: eg. lice then we recommend a one off treatment is usually only necessary. We also advise checking again after a couple weeks to make sure the louse infestation has gone. If not - then best to repeat. We generally inspect (physical health check) our birds 2 to 4 times a year (usually when the seasons change) and treat them accordingly for lice. We find the pour on drench works brilliantly for lice control. Poison. Keep away from children.

We placed Snowy's box in her hutch with some hay inside the kindling box and plenty just outside. She got very busy building her nest hopping in with mouthfuls of hay and lining her nest in preparation for the kits. Our kindling boxes are made of untreated plywood with wire mesh on the base and made to the right dimensions. We have a lift up hinged lid which works well give the doe security.

Tips for training chooks onto nipples.
The golden rule for teaching birds to use any type of new watering system like nipples is to remove all other sources of water! As long as they have what they are familiar with they will use it first and will never try something new. If their only choice is to drink from that new shiny metal thingy hanging under the pipe or bucket, it will only take one thirsty bird to try it and show everybody elsewhere to get a drink. To teach your birds to use the nipples, remember the golden rule - remove all other sources of water! When installing the new nipple system, simply gather your chooks around and show them by tapping the nipples with your fingers which cause water to leak. That will get their attention and they learn very quickly.
We recommend 3-4 chooks per nipple.

All chickens get clean by getting dirty 😊Just like a human bathtub, a dust bath is all about cleanliness. It’s not only chickens who like to hit the dirt – you may spot other birds such as sparrows and blackbirds taking a dust bath too. The dust or sand absorbs surplus moisture and oils on the skin. A dirt bath maintains the water resistance of the outer feathers of a chicken. It also deters parasites such as mites and lice by coating the insects’ breathing pores or simply driving them away. Dust bathing is an important part of keeping chickens healthy and clean. Once fully coated in dust or sand, the chicken will have a shake-down, just like a dog after a dip in a river. A quick preen of the feathers, and they’ll be all done and dusted. Literally. In addition to these physical benefits, dust-bathing is also thought to be mentally rewarding for hens. This is an aftermarket replacement float valve with 15mm bsp male fitting. The float comes complete with fixing nut and rubber washer.
