If you love your chooks, why not feed them a small treat of wheat in the afternoon! Remember just 5 to 10 grams especially if your birds are on a complete, balanced pellet diet like Weston Free Range or Peak Layer Pellets. Fenugreek Trigonella foenum-graecumFenugreek is an annual plant that is grown mainly in India, Pakistan, and China. Fernugreek seeds possess many beneficial effects such as hypoglycemic, anti-helminthic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties. Nutritional-wise, fenugreek is a rich source of protein, fatty acids, and minerals such as phosphorus, iron, zinc, magnesium, and calcium. Yes, we recommend giving shell grit to your hens!
We feed out Weston Layer pellets to our laying birds and the soluble calcium levels in this commercial feed are adequate for eggs production with sound shells. However for those birds that are in enclosed runs and do not have access to large areas of free-range we provide shell grit separately. Shell grit has 3 benefits over the soluble limestone they add in the feed.
The hard shell bits act as teeth in the gizzard to assist in grinding up the feed and aids digestion.
The intake of calcium from the shells helps strengthen the shell of the chicken eggs.
Plus trace elements from the sea will be beneficial to their diet
At Appletons we fill a small pot planter (or an old pottery dish with a hole in it) secured by a wire stake in the ground (so the birds don't knock it over!) with our fine shell grit. Don't forget to line it with some weed mat to contain the grit so it does not all wash out!

Nettex Wound Spray is an easy-to-apply aerosol to treat wounds on chickens. Many poultry wounds are caused by a peck, a spur, a claw, or something else dirty, germs can often get deep into the wounds. A highly effective cleanser with a powerful bactericidal action. Treats superficial wounds and abrasions and it works quickly to kill bacteria to stop the threat of infection.

Separate injured bird from others to avoid potential cannibalism.
Clean wound and spray area from about 15cm (6”).
Repeat daily or as necessary.
Do not use on large open wounds that may require stitching or hydrogel bandaging.
We recommend using gloves during application as any purple spray will also stain your skin.
At Appletons we like having wound spray on hand to treat any wounds or assist with feather-pecking. The violet colouring masks the colour of blood and the spray does an excellent job of healing the wound fast.
Very effective for treating poultry lice.
Used with great results in poultry circles as a reliable treatment for most internal and external parasites. Effective on external parasites ie: lice and scaly leg mite but will also kill any red mites that try to suck off your chicken.
This is long-lasting endectocide and is applied directly to the skin of the bird. It is approved for use on other farm animals but has not been officially approved for use on poultry hence the recommended 14-day withholding period for eggs and meat. This little bottle will treat a good number of birds. (Approximately 100 treatments if applied correctly.)

Helpful Notes.What are you treating your birds for? Worms? If you are treating for internal parasites we recommend following up treatment within the prepatent period of the particular worm you are treating for. We have a great blog on worming which you may find helpful. (link below) If your hens are laying best to use a product that has no withholding period like Flubenol.Lice?If you are treating for external parasites: eg. lice then we recommend a one off treatment is usually only necessary. We also advise checking again after a couple weeks to make sure the louse infestation has gone. If not - then best to repeat. We generally inspect (physical health check) our birds 2 to 4 times a year (usually when the seasons change) and treat them accordingly for lice. We find the pour on drench works brilliantly for lice control. Poison. Keep away from children.
