Dust Bath Bowl Kit | Appletons

    6 reviews

All chickens get clean by getting dirty 😊 Just like a human bathtub, a dust bath to chickens is all about cleanliness. It’s not only chickens who like to hit the dirt – you may spot other birds such as sparrows and blackbirds taking a dust bath too. The dust or sand absorbs surplus moisture and oils on the skin. A dirt bath maintains the water resistance of the outer feathers of a chicken. It also deters parasites such as mites and lice by coating the insects’ breathing pores or simply driving them away. Dust bathing is an important part of keeping chickens healthy and clean. Once fully coated in dust or sand, the chicken will have a shake-down, just like a dog after a dip in a river. A quick preen of the feathers, and they’ll be all done and dusted. Literally. In addition to these physical benefits, dust-bathing is also thought to be mentally rewarding for hens. It helps them relax, and is a way of socialising too. Keep your hens mite and lice free with an Appletons Dust Bath Kit.  Your Appletons Dust Bath Kit includes: Recycled rubber dust bath bowl with carry handles – heavy duty 1 cup calcium carbonate + REFILL 1 x 1.5kg Fine Sand + REFILL 1 cup Wood Ash + REFILL A dash of Medicinal Herbs (depending on availability can be lavender, rosemary, lemon balm or mint) We have supplied all you need except for the dry dirt which is best sourced from your own backyard. Make sure it is dry, fine and friable.Dust Bath Bowl is best placed undercover or out of the rain on wet days. Refills available

  • Scaly Leg Spray 500ml Scaly Leg

    Scaly Leg Spray 500ml

    50 reviews

Very effective organic treatment for poultry scaly leg mite. This treatment is totally organic. A mixture of Cotton Seed Oil and Eucalyptus. Instructions.Spray oil on legs, avoiding the feathers. Saturate the affected areas.  "Scaly Leg Spray" works by suffocation. A good poultry leg spray should be applied twice a week (every 4 to 6 days) to the feet and legs for four treatments. Cleanliness and sanitary measures around the chicken coop are in order because the mites can live for long periods in cracks and crevices without feed and water. Please keep bottle at room temperature and best used when contents is warm. If too cold the liquid will not move through the sprayer. Do Your Chickens Have Scaly Leg Mite?Scaly legs on chickens are caused by a parasitic mite (Knemidocoptes mutans) that burrow under the scales on the chicken's legs. The damaged tissue weeps, which is what these mites feed on. Signs and Symptoms. Raised scales on the legs. Crusty legs. Lameness (severe cases). Can also be found on the comb and wattles. In the early stages of the infection, the chicken will have mild irritation. It takes several months of infection before the scales on the legs start to lift. Repeat application is recommended. You should treat all of your birds even if only one bird has scaly legs, as scaly leg mite is very contagious and it is highly likely that all of your birds will have the mite.Scaly foot is a bird ailment that is common among caged birds and also affects many other bird species. It is caused by mites in the genus Knemidocoptes which burrow into the bird's flesh. The tunnels made by the mites within the skin cause dermatitis and scaly lesions. Scaly face is caused by the same mite responsible for scaly foot and other related mites cause depluming. The condition is transmitted from one bird to another by direct prolonged contact.

  • Coxiprol Solution 250ml Coxiprol Solution 1Lt

    Coxiprol Solution

    16 reviews

Coxiprol is essential to have handy when raising young birds. Coccidiosis is an intestinal parasite that exists just about everywhere. It can take a heavy toll on chicks, starting from about three weeks of age. The parasite multiplies greatly in the gut of the chick, and vast numbers of "oocysts" (think of them as eggs) come out in the manure. Chicks raised on litter floors scratch and peck at the litter, looking for food, and become infected. The explosive multiplication of the coccidia can lead to dead, stunted, and sick chicks. Chicks that are exposed to only low levels of coccidia become immune without becoming sick. Control is achieved by breaking the reproductive cycle. Chicks raised on wire floors don't get coccidiosis because they don't have enough contact with the manure. Chicks raised on free-range from a very early age tend not to get it because they also don't have enough exposure. Chicks raised on old litter (used for at least six months) tend not to get it because the litter eventually harbours microscopic creatures that eat coccidia. Medicated chick starter contains drugs that suppress coccidia directly. Wet litter, crowding, intermittent feeding, and any type of stress tend to increase coccidiosis. If the feeders are empty, the chicks will spend more time nosing around in the litter. If you have an outbreak of coccidiosis, - the first signs are usually visible as ‘bloody’ poop. A must-have if hatching and raising your own chicks!Treating CoccidiosisAnticoccidial drugs are very effective. The danger zone is usually around 3 to 7 weeks. Keep chicks on a crumble that contains low levels of coccidiostat. With a serious outbreak, you need to put a coccidiostat in the water, since sick chicks that will not eat will still drink. It is worth having an anticoccidial drug-like Coxiprol on hand as if caught earlier enough and treated the chicks bounce back quickly. Available in a 250ml and a 1L bottle.

  • Flubenol 5% - Poultry and Pig Wormer Flubenol 5% - Poultry and Pig Wormer

Flubenol 5% | Poultry and Pig Wormer

    65 reviews

This worming treatment has no egg withholding period. Yes, you can keep eating the eggs 😊 Flubenol™ 5% contains flubendazole, a broad-spectrum anthelmintic with high efficacy against all gastrointestinal worm species that commonly occur in poultry. It is effective against roundworms (Ascaridia galli, Heterakis gallinarum, Capillaria spp., Amidostomum anseris and Trichostrongylus tenuis), gapeworm (Syngamus trachea) and tapeworms (Raillietina sp.). Its safety profile allows a safe and secure use in most poultry species, including the breeding stock. Flubenol is a tasteless powder which is added to dry feed.  Dosage for chickens/turkeys/geese/partridge and pheasants. Dosage rate:To treat your flock mix the powder thoroughly into the feed and feed it for seven consecutive days. It needs to be thoroughly mixed through the pellets or dry mash. (Do not just sprinkle on top.) To treat a large flock (22-25 hens) mix 15g (3 teaspoons) into 21.5kg feed for chickens and geese or for a smaller flock (7-8 hens) 5g (one teaspoon) per 7kg feed. (please check the recommended daily ration on your feed bag to determine the exact amount). To treat pheasants and partridge mix 15g (3 teaspoons) with 11kg feed. To treat turkeys mix 15g (3 teaspoons) in with 32kg feed. In case of infestation with tapeworm, double the dose for seven consecutive days. Do not use this product to treat pigeons or parrots. How to dose: Calculate what 1 hen eats daily. The best way to do this is to look at the bag of layer feed you are using which will indicate the recommended daily feed ration on the back. For Weston Layer feed it is app. 130g per day per hen.  Count the number of hens in your flock (best to treat everyone). Multiply the number of hens by the daily ration for one hen. This total will indicate how much feed your flock eats in a day. Then multiply this number by seven (the number of days you will be treating) If using an auto feeder empty the feeder and fill it with the calculated amount of medicated feed for the week. (If your calculations are correct then this quantity should feed them for the week)   Let your hens self-help for seven days.  On the eighth day remove and empty the feeder. Replace with non-medicated fresh feed. For best results we recommend sanitising/ cleaning your hen house at the same time  using Poultry Safeguard. For more info on deworming your flock read here. Follow up TreatmentAll poultry worms have a life cycle of between 2 to 7 weeks. It is really important to break this life cycle so a repeat treatment should be administered within the pre-patient period of the worm/s (PPP). The PPP is the time period in days from worm egg ingestion by the chicken until the adult worm starts producing eggs in the chicken and sheds these eggs into the environment. When dealing with specific problem worm species, we always consider the PPP of the worm in question, because you want to try and keep your Flubenol treatment interval just shorter than this time period, so that you effectively prevent further contamination of the environment with worm eggs, and thereby just continue the infective cycle. So for instance with normal large roundworm (Ascarid) infection, a longer treatment interval of around 5-6 weeks is what we suggest (the life cycle or PPP of this worm species is the longest of all the commonly found poultry worms). However, with Gapeworm, the PPP is around 2-3 weeks. So to effectively control the burden for this worm species we recommend following up with another treatment 2 weeks after completion of the first. We recommend doing a follow-up treatment of Flubenol within the PPP for the worm you are treating. The good news - no withholding period for eggs and meat for poultry. Symptoms following overdosing: Flubenol 5% is non-toxic; even considerable overdosing does not produce side effects.  In poultry, even three times the highest dose for seven days had no negative effects on egg production, egg quality, hatching results and growth of offspring.Treatment with Flubenol can only be effective if the hygiene of pig pens and poultry housing is observed. Available in a 600g tub and in smaller sachets for treating smaller flocks. Treatment for Pigs Flubenol is effective against the mature and immature larvae and eggs of the following species of worm: Large Roundworm, Red Stomach Worm, Nodular Worm Lungworm, Threadworm and Whipworm. Individual treatment: (Single administration).Add 1 g of Flubenol for each 10 kg bodyweight onto the finished feed. (This is equivalent to 5 mg of flubendazole per one kg bodyweight). One 13 g measuring spoon treats one 130 kg sow. An easy way of administering the dose is to add it to a buttered bread roll and feed it to your pig. Treat twice a year unless recommended otherwise by your veterinary surgeon.  Pigs brought onto the premises should be treated on arrival and before mixing with other animals.  Animals must not be slaughtered for human consumption within 7 days of treatment.

    Aviverm Poultry Wormer 50ml

    7 reviews

It's good practice to worm your hens regularly. Monitoring your chooks droppings is one way to keep track of their general health. If you see signs of worms in their faecal matter we recommend worming your poultry.  Active Ingredient: Levamisole Hydrochloride 24% w/v as an aqueous solutionEffective treat for worms for chickens, turkeys, ducks, cage birds and pigeons. Aviverm™ is an anthelmintic which provides simultaneous treatment of immature and adult stages of the three most important intestinal worms: Ascaridia (roundworm; Capillaria (hairworm); Heterakis (cecal worm) Easy to use ONE dose treatment. Birds should immediately resume full growth rate and egg production. A ready-to-pour liquid concentrate that makes a clear solution in their drinking water. Palatable to birds of all ages. Easy follow-up treatment  5 to 7 days later is important, as this will get any eggs that have hatched & break the worms' breeding cycle. Withholding period for eating eggs or birds produced for meat is 7 days after treatment! Directions for Use: Simple to use; add to your chooks drinking water at a rate of 1ml per 9 kg of body weight.  If you have 3 x hens in your flock, only 1 ml of Aviverm is required to treat them all. 1 ml added to 1 litre of water (based on approximately 300mls per hen per day) should be all they need for about 8 hours. For larger flocks estimate the number of birds served by each tank and work out their average weight Using these figures, estimate their total live weight Now estimate how much Aviverm™ is required at a dose of 1ml per 9kg live weight Add this quantity of Aviverm™ to the drinking water  Ensure sufficient water is available for 8 hours of normal consumption Total Live Weight  Dose (based on 1ml per 9kg live weight) 250g 0.03ml 500g 0.06ml 1kg 0.11ml   Formula used:   Administration:For maximum efficiency, the treated water should be consumed in the shortest possible time. • Appletons Pour On Drench 30ml dropper bottle

    Pour-on Drench 30ml

    49 reviews

Very effective for treating poultry lice. Used with great results in poultry circles as a reliable treatment for most internal and external parasites. Effective on external parasites ie: lice and scaly leg mite but will also kill any red mites that try to suck off your chicken.  This is long-lasting endectocide and is applied directly to the skin of the bird. It is approved for use on other farm animals but has not been officially approved for use on poultry hence the recommended 14-day withholding period for eggs and meat. This little bottle will treat a good number of birds. (Approximately 100 treatments if applied correctly.) Now available in a dropper bottle with nozzle and cap for handy dosing. Helpful Notes. What are you treating your birds for? Worms? If you are treating for internal parasites we recommend following up treatment within the prepatent period of the particular worm you are treating for. We have a great blog on worming which you may find helpful. (link below) If your hens are laying best to use a product that has no withholding period like Flubenol.Lice? If you are treating for external parasites: eg. lice then we recommend a one off treatment is usually only necessary. We also advise checking again after a couple weeks to make sure the louse infestation has gone. If not - then best to repeat. We generally inspect (physical health check) our birds 2 to 4 times a year (usually when the seasons change) and treat them accordingly for lice. We find the pour on drench works brilliantly for lice control. Poison. Keep away from children. Please note this is a liquid and we cannot slip it into a courier satchel - it needs to be sent in a box.

Nettex Wound Spray is an easy-to-apply aerosol to treat wounds on chickens. Many poultry wounds are caused by a peck, a spur, a claw, or something else dirty, germs can often get deep into the wounds. A highly effective cleanser with a powerful bactericidal action. Treats superficial wounds and abrasions and it works quickly to kill bacteria to stop the threat of infection.  A must-have in any poultry first-aid kit! Antibacterial – providing effective protection from the risk of bacterial infection. Leaves a violet coloured residue when applied to indicate that the affected area has been covered and to disguise the appearance of blood, to help prevent pecking or bullying. An essential tool for minor wound management. Aerosol spray for precise and easy application. HOW TO USE Separate injured bird from others to avoid potential cannibalism. Clean wound and spray area from about 15cm (6”). Repeat daily or as necessary. Do not use on large open wounds that may require stitching or hydrogel bandaging. We recommend using gloves during application as any purple spray will also stain your skin. At Appletons we like having wound spray on hand to treat any wounds or assist with feather-pecking. The violet colouring masks the colour of blood and the spray does an excellent job of healing the wound fast.

Anti-feather pecking spray for poultry. Unfortunately, the Nettex Anti-Feather Pecking Spray was ordered but not packed in the shipment. We do apologise for this inconvenience. We are not sure as to when we will next have it in stock. Nettex Anti-Feather Pecking Spray is a dual-purpose spray to help prevent pecking among chickens and cleanse minor wounds. Deterrent spray with a strong odour and foul taste to help discourage biting, plucking and cannibalism. Contains antibacterial agents that will help cleanse minor skin wounds and abrasions and support the healing process. Cannibalism and feather pecking are complex behavioural problems of chickens. Boredom can increase incidence and can lead to minor wounds and infection. Symptoms include pecking at the feet, vent, head, wings and feather pulling. A must-have in the poultry first-aid kit! HOW TO USE Disposable gloves must be worn. Shake well before use. Spray for approximately 3-4 seconds around the pecked area. Repeat every 3-5 days until pecking has stopped. Cannibalism and feather pecking are complex behavioural problems found in both poultry and game birds worldwide. It can affect any birds in small backyard flocks through to the large commercial flocks. One day all is fine in the pen then the next time you look it has started. There are many reasons for it happening but some of the main reasons are overcrowding, boredom, stress, pecking order, poor quality feed and disease. If it happens in your flock you need to move fast and treat birds and if necessary remove wounded birds. Symptoms include pecking at the feet (usually very young chicks) and the vents, tails, wings and sometimes the head and necks of young and mature birds. It can also include feather pulling. Cannibalism and feather pecking may lead to wounding leaving the skin open to bacterial infection. In severe cases, this leads to the loss of blood and leads to general anaemia. If the feather pecking and cannibalism is not caught in time birds can be almost eaten alive and sometimes 'gutted' if the wounds start around the tail and vent. If you find it in your flock act quickly. Most of us that keep poultry will find this a very useful spray as feather-pecking can be a real problem at times in flocks.  Please note if feather pecking has been happening for a while in your flock the 'action of feather pecking' becomes a habit. Habits can be hard to break. Removing the pecker (the bird responsible and usually the bird showing no visible signs of feather loss) from the situation is often the best thing to do. Treat the affected birds in the flock and give them an opportunity to regrow their feathers - which can take a good 4 to 8 weeks. If your chickens have wounds from pecking please remove them and treat them with Nettex Wound Spray. Do not leave chickens with visible fresh wounds in your flock as it is too tempting for other chickens to peck them.

Refill For Dust Bath Bowl Kit | Appletons

    4 reviews

Chickens love to dust bath. Your Appletons Dust Bath Refill Kit includes: 1 cup calcium carbonate.1 x 1.5kg Fine Sand.1 cup Wood Ash.A dash of Medicinal Herbs (depending on availability can be lavender, lemon balm or mint). All chickens get clean by getting dirty 😊Just like a human bathtub, a dust bath is all about cleanliness. It helps them relax, and is a way of socialising too.Keep your hens mite and lice free with an Appletons Dust Bath Kit.

    Poultry Shell Grit | Appletons

Yes, we recommend giving shell grit to your hens! We feed out Weston Layer pellets to our laying birds and the soluble calcium levels in this commercial feed are adequate for eggs production with sound shells. However for those birds that are in enclosed runs and do not have access to large areas of free-range we provide shell grit separately. Shell grit has 3 benefits over the soluble limestone they add in the feed. The hard shell bits act as teeth in the gizzard to assist in grinding up the feed and aids digestion. The intake of calcium from the shells helps strengthen the shell of the chicken eggs. Plus trace elements from the sea will be beneficial to their diet At Appletons we fill a small pot planter (or an old pottery dish with a hole in it) secured by a wire stake in the ground (so the birds don't knock it over!) with our fine shell grit. Don't forget to line it with some weed mat to contain the grit so it does not all wash out!   Available in a 2kg or a 5kg bag.
