At Appletons we prefer to grow our birds (both commercial hybrids and heritage) on to point of lay using the Weston Chicks Choice as it has higher levels of protein essential for health, growth and feather production. Chickens do not stop growing at 8 weeks.
We would only recommend swopping over to Chook Grow if you personally had issues with the coccidiostat added to the Chicks Choice or are feeding a range of ages of poultry together in one pen and you have laying hens that have access to the same feed. Chook Grow does not contain any coccidiostat (which the Chicks Choice does) There is a 3 to 4% difference in the protein levels which we feel is significant – so if you can keep them on the Chicks Choice then that is what we recommend.

Keep 2 to 3 false eggs in the nest box to encourage your hens where to lay.We recommending investing in some fake eggs. Very handy to have for a few reasons! We place them in the laying boxes when pullets are POL (point of lay) to encourage them to lay in the nest boxes. Hens will go and lay where there is usually an egg or two so having a pair of fake eggs permanently in the nest box/es is a good idea. Collect the fresh eggs daily and leave the fake eggs as an indicator to your hens. Slipping some wooden eggs under a broody hen to keep her sitting is another reason to have a pair... and fake eggs are solid so cannot be pecked at... collect fresh eggs often to reduce the risk of hens eating eggs.

The drinker works on a similar principle to nipple drinkers, although is designed for use specifically for poultry and game (not rabbits or mischievous parrots that like to chew).
The device requires a low-pressure gravity feed supply via a header tank, drum or bucket. (no greater than 400mm of head).
Alternatively, the cups can be attached directly to any container with a reasonably thick base so can be drilled and threaded.

Tips for training chooks onto nipples
The golden rule for teaching birds to use any type of new watering system like nipples is to remove all other sources of water! As long as they have what they are familiar with they will use it first and will never try something new. If their only choice is to drink from that new shiny metal thingy hanging under the pipe or bucket, it will only take one thirsty bird to try it and show everybody elsewhere to get a drink. So just to be perfectly clear, to teach your birds to use the nipples, remember golden rule...Remove all other sources of water! When installing the new nipple system, simply gather your chooks around and show them by tapping the nipples with your fingers which cause water to leak. That will get their attention and they learn very quickly.
We recommend 1-3 chooks per nipple.

How To InstallSimply use a 9mm drill bit and make a small hole in the bottom of your chosen water container. The hole needs to be just smaller than the threaded bit on the nipple. Step-by-Step Humane Use of a Dispatch Cone
1) Prepare
Equipment: sharp killing knife (at least 12–15 cm, double-sided if possible), very clean, disinfected.
Cone: mounted at a comfortable working height.
Optional but best practice: poultry stunner (electric or percussive).
Have a bucket/tray beneath for blood collection.
Keep the environment quiet and calm (away from other birds if possible).
2) Catch & Handle Gently
Approach calmly, hold the bird firmly but gently.
Support wings against the body to prevent flapping.
Avoid chasing birds, as this causes stress.
3) Place in the Cone
Insert the bird head first into the cone.
The cone should be snug so the bird cannot turn or flap.
The head and neck should extend out of the bottom.
4) Stun (Preferred Method)
If you have a stunner, apply it now:
Electric: electrodes applied to both sides of the head (follow device instructions).
Percussive: a rapid blow to the head, causing instant unconsciousness.
Confirm unconsciousness (no blinking when the corner of the eye is touched, no righting reflex).
⚠️ If no stunner is available, you must cut swiftly and very cleanly (step 5).
5) Neck Cut
Use the sharp knife to make a deep, firm cut just behind the jawbone, across both sides of the neck.
Aim to sever both carotid arteries and jugular veins in one clean stroke.
Avoid cutting the spine or decapitating — bleeding is more effective and humane when vessels are cut.
6) Allow to Bleed Out
Keep the bird in the cone while it bleeds.
Reflex flapping is normal, but the bird should be unconscious if cut/stunned correctly.
Time to death is usually under 60 seconds.
7) Confirm Death
Before removing from the cone, check:
No rhythmic breathing.
No blink reflex when touching the eye.
No heartbeat (may be hard to feel, but absence of breathing + reflex = safe).
8) Aftercare
Dispose of blood and offal hygienically (MPI requires this).
Clean and disinfect equipment after each use.
✅ This method is considered the most humane way for home kill poultry in NZ when a cone is used.
✅ SPCA recommends always stunning first, but if not possible, the cut must be rapid and precise.

Perfect for using in the brooder box for day-old chicks, ducklings, guinea fowl and pheasant.The set includes a Crown 1.3L drinker and the Euro chick feed trough. Using the correct drinker and feeder in the brooder box will save both time and money. The chick drinker is designed to prevent chicks drowning and stops chicks walking through water and wetting all the bedding.
Omlet rabbit water bottle.
This standard 600ml Water Bottle Drinker is supplied with the Rabbit Eglu Go Hutch. This bottle is compatible with the Omlet hay rack. The bottle supplied is a different colour to the one in the photo. No wire supplied. The 600ml bottle is designed to fit in the Omlet Hay rack. If you wish to attach directly to the run of a hutch best to use cable ties. Two or three tied together work well.
Please take the time to read the instructions on the side of the drink bottle for best results.
CAUTION - Follow the instructions below to prevent leakage:1. Completely fill the bottle with fresh, clean water - not half-filled.2. Fully tighten the cap to create a waterproof seal - not loosely tightened.3. Shake or squeeze the bottle once to create a vacuum.4. Check that water is not continuously dripping from the spout.5. Attach the water bottle to the cage for your pets to enjoy, double-check that water isnot dripping.
