All our timber housing is made to order. Delivery time will be on top of production time. We recommend a depot collection. For depot deliveries please use the physical address of your nearest Mainfreight Depot. For home deliveries please ensure your address is entered correctly. We will check and confirm all freight quotes and amend if required. Please note if you are requesting a door delivery there must be truck access, someone needs to be available on site to assist with a hand-unload otherwise opt for a depot delivery. Please read our shipping tab and T&Cs prior to confirming your order.

Great Hen house and run

Appletons Hen House and fully enclosed run, is well constructed and easy to put together with clear instructions. It is able to be put together by one person and takes about 2 hours. The details and assistance from Appletons is excellent and they provide excellent information on looking after your chickens. Highly recommend the hen House

Classic hen house

We have no complaints,we have raised house of ground about 300mm to avoid water issues from neighbors run off,gravel ramp to pop door and no issues, using wood shaving inside and no issues, a little problem with perch rails sliding when chooks leave the rail but that's not a big issue as I'll make some blocks to stop sliding but still allow for removal for cleaning,we have also retained part of the run from old house for extra area during rain or when the bloody Hawks are about,so yep all good thank you,cheers Frank, p.s.we run 16 brown shaver and large free range area,hope this helps for future enquiries

Classic Hen House being used as a Classic Cat Enclosure

We have set up the Classic Hen House to use as a Classic Cat Enclosure for one very old cat and deaf cat. The egg laying boxes are now sleeping boxes and we have installed shelves on the back wall for the cats to use and have used flexible perspex to cover the netting and therefore create a warm, dry, safe enclosure for our cats for when we are not home.
The enclosure fits ticks the boxes for our pets needs.
The only thing we would comment on is that the door had worped slightly so did close well at the bottom.

Excellent!

This is the 2nd chook house we have bought from Appletons. It is well made, easy to assemble and works great. Our chooks couldn't be happier.

If I had to come up with some ideas for improvement I'd suggest 2 things:

1. Wrap it tighter as the plastic had unwound and we almost lost a few parts on the way home

2. In our first chook house the "Ultimate Timber Chicken Coop On Wheels", I find that there isn't sufficient clearance between the wheels and the ground to move the coup easily. Any stones, grass or dirt is caught by the steel base of the trolley and acts as a brake. The only way to avoid this is by lifting it higher which requires super human strength. But knowing this I'd still.buy it again.

The chook house we got from you is amazing, so easy to put together and plenty of room for the chickens (actually way too much for the 3 we have, it’s like living in the Hilton)!!! We need to get some more Chooks ...

We are so pleased with this hen house! We wanted one big enough for our 24 chooks, and it is perfect. Best of all it took under about 90 mins to put together!! I'll be buying another if I ever expand my flock. Just great!

Really pleased...

I am so happy with this hen house. Easily put together with two people with limited handiskills, although I do recommend you use a powered driver rather than a hand one - much quicker and easier! The hens love this house and with the wood shavings in it is a pleasure to spend time in, for them and me. It is easy to clean, and great to know they are safe and secure at night time. Really pleased with this purchase - thanks :-)

All timber roosts are removable for easy cleaning. If you need to temporarily secure the roosts so that do not move around.
We recommend using a wedge pushed down at one end or placing 2 nails (one each side of the perch) on both ends.

Choose Your Layout

With our Classic Hen House you can choose to have the person door access positioned in the front mesh panel or in the side panel.

The photo shows the person door in the Left End Panel with the nest boxes on the Right. This option works well if you wish to place a run off the front and do not wish to walk into the run to access the hen house.

Things To Consider | Layout, pop-holes, roof colour, rolled gutters

Give careful consideration where you are going to position your hen house.

Layout?

Best Position and Access
Carefully consider the placement of your hen house. Position solid walls to protect against prevailing wind and rain. It is advised to orient the front mesh panel towards the sun, as sunlight is beneficial. Ensure easy access to nest boxes, as egg collection is a daily task. Additionally, provide ample space for accessing the person door, particularly for cleaning, allowing room for a wheelbarrow.

Need Additional Chicken Access?

Chook Pop-holes
One pop-hole is adequate BUT if you are wanting to alternate your flocks free-range time then consider adding another pop-hole. If you have a paddock to the rear of the hen house and a run off the front then alternate their free range between these two areas. Keep them safe in the run (whilst you are at work) and give them access to free range at the weekends (when you are home) This will require two pop-holes; one in the front and an additional one where required.

Upgrade to a Roof Colour?

The roof, flashings, and ridge capping are constructed from galvanized corrugated iron. For those seeking a specific roof colour, please choose from the Colorsteel Endura Range. (please google latest range online) Upgrading to a Colorsteel Endura roof enhances aesthetics, reduces glare associated with galvanized iron, and complements your home and outbuildings effectively.

Add a Rolled Gutter?

Additional Rolled Gutter
A rolled gutter is standard on the front of your hen house (front mesh panel). We can add another rolled gutter in galvanized iron if needed, or if you want a roof colour, choose the Colorsteel Endura option. Rolled gutters look good and remove the sharp corro-iron edge, which could be at head height for some. If you can walk around your hen house, it's best to choose two rolled gutters. A rolled gutter also guides water to the gutter ends, preventing a dripline.

The Classic Hen House can be purchased with a run attached to either the front or rear. This configuration is optimal for allowing your chickens to enjoy sunlight, dust bathe, and forage freely within a secure space. The run provides enhanced security, protecting your hens from potential predators (dogs, cats, stoats, ferrets, weasels etc)Additionally, it helps manage their movement, preventing them from entering flower beds or damaging your vegetable garden.
