Large Step On Feeder 12kg | Appletons

    49 reviews

Our best selling auto feeder! Stop feeding the sparrows, rats and mice and keep your chicken feed clean 😊 Benefits: For chook keepers that keep 4 to 20 hens -however, the feeder will need to be topped up more regularly if you keep more hens. Remember an average laying hen eats app. 130 - 140g of layer pellets a day so the consumption vs when you need to fill it up can be calculated. Suitable for all standard sized birds (brown shavers and hylines), heavy breeds and some of the larger light breeds (leghorns). This brilliant step-on auto chicken feeder has a large capacity and holds approximately 12kg. Hens are foragers and do best eating little and often throughout the day so feed on demand works best. Reduces hierarchy in flocks ensuring all birds get enough feed which results in happy hens and better egg production. Vermin-proof: Keeps out rats, mice and sparrows ensuring your poultry feed is not contaminated. Keeps feed clean and helps to reduce the worm burden. Ideal for busy people that are not always home early in the morning and late afternoon to feed their hens and those of us that go away for weekends. Reduces feed wastage and saves money. Open feeders can lose up to 40% of feed to sparrows and other birds. NZ made - supporting local NZ business The unit is made from aluminium with alloy rivets, plated steel hinges, nuts and bolts so it keeps working in adverse weather. Includes our very own Appletons training instructions which are clear and easy to follow. Training is very important and not to be rushed or shortened. Chickens need to be POL (point of lay) 18+ weeks of age and older for training. Dimensions: App. 51cm (long) x 46cm (wide) x 22cm (height) What Size is Best? The large step on feeder or mini step on feeder? The large size is more suitable for a larger walk-in hen house especially if you plan to position the feeder inside the hen house or outside in the poultry run (protected from the weather) where there is plenty of space. The large step on is twice as wide as the mini and therefore offers more hens the opportunity to feed at once (+ it also holds more food.) The mini 6kg version is perfect for smaller flocks living in movable chicken coops where the footprint of the coop is small and space is a premium. Using two mini step on feeders in a larger flock (instead of one large one) can work well as two feeding stations can dissipate any possible dominance over the feeder by a bossy hen/s and also help when introducing new birds. "At one stage we were feeding all the neighbourhood sparrows, mice and rats and it was costing us a fortune. When we moved to these step-on feeders (now 16 years ago!) and got the chooks trained to use them our feed bill was considerably reduced and the feed now stays clean and is no longer contaminated with mouse/sparrow droppings. Plus our chook houses are also now free of sparrow droppings and easier to keep clean reducing risk from contamination like salmonella and other diseases carried by the wild birds and rodents. Definitely worth the investment. It will pay for itself in no time!" Please note this size feeder is not suitable for bantams, we do have the Appletons Bantam Step On Feeder for smaller sized birds. Our Appletons Mini Step On Feeder is identical to our Large Step On Feeder but only half the width - ideal if you have a smaller flock of 3 to 5 standard-sized hens and/or need to fit it in a small run/coop.

Chickens eating from Appletons premier feeder

Selecting the right feeder/s for your chickens and poultry area is worth doing. Using purpose-built poultry feeders and drinkers will save time, energy and money in the long run and keep your chooks happy and healthy. Throwing pellets out once a day onto the ground is not going to get the best production from your hens or make your daily chores a pleasure. Chickens are not designed for once-a-day feeds. They are foragers by nature and eat little and often throughout the day. Having all-day access to step-on feeders that keep out vermin (sparrows, rats and mice that bring disease) and allow all chickens in the pecking order access to quality feed whenever they need it is the way to go.  We have some great feeders available.
