Reap the benefits of using untreated wood shavings in chicken housing. Ideal for raising chicks and for use in nesting boxes, wood shavings are the best choice for a deep litter system. We recommend them over wood chips or sawdust because shavings are soft, fluffy curls of timber rather than dusty particles that can clog or hard, sharp chips. Deep litter refers to the loose, dry layer of material—ideally wood shavings—spread over a dry plywood floor in the hen house. When combined with chicken manure and topped up with fresh wood shavings as needed, deep litter usually only needs to be removed every 6 to 12 months. If maintained properly, it stays odour-free and breaks down into rich compost without added weeds when added to the compost bin. We do not recommend hay or straw for deep litter systems because they absorb moisture less effectively and may carry mould or fungal spores that can affect the respiratory health of pets and people.
