For long-lasting residual control of Red Mite and other external parasites in poultry housing. Dust on perches and nesting areas in poultry houses. We recommend first sanitising the hen house with Poultry Safeguard Concentrate or Smite Concentrate or Poultry Shield and when surfaces are dry apply the Appletons De-Mite Powder. Poultry Safeguard Concentrate | Appletons

    147 reviews

Our best selling coop cleaner. Voted the best solution to keep on top of Red Mite! Red mites reproduce rapidly. These nasty bugs don’t live on your chickens but hide in the framework of your coop, perches and nest boxes, only coming out at night to feed on the blood of your birds. The result is your chickens become stressed, suffering anaemia, reducing egg production and even death if not treated. Red mites are also very difficult to control, so Appletons have developed Poultry Safeguard which dissolves mites on contact. It’s also a powerful disinfectant, killing bacteria, viruses and odour in coops.Appletons Poultry Safeguard is New Zealand made and best of all it is economical. It is a concentrate which you mix with water as you need it - you get approximately 50 litres of maintenance solution from our 1-litre bottles and as a mite treatment approximately 20 litres. Making it more cost-effective when compared to other similar available products.Poultry Safeguard is a non-toxic blend of high foaming surfactants, sequestrates and alkaline builders and quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) which effectively dissolves waxy accumulations and is effective against a range of microbes (including Avian Influenza Virus, Avian Infectious Bronchitis and Newcastle’s disease) and micro-organisms including bacteria, mildew, moulds and fungi. There is no egg withholding period which is great as you can let your hens back in to lay.The ultimate solution to a mite-free hen house. No other cleaner does the job better! Available in 500ml, 1L and 5L Concentrate bottles

  • A natural solution to prevent red mite infestations in poultry sheds, coops, hutches or houses. Banshee red mite natural deterrent solution Hawkeye

Banshee 240ml - Red Mite Solution | Hawkeye

A natural NZ-made repellent to deter and prevent red mite infestations in poultry sheds, coops, hutches or houses. Banshee is a blend of natural plant essential oils in a mineral oil carrier, featuring emulsifiers that allow it to mix easily with water for easy application. To use, simply mix and spray the solution onto coop surfaces. There is no need to treat the birds directly. Banshee works by disrupting mite activity, encouraging them to leave treated areas and reducing infestations over time. It is a safe, effective, and easy-to-use solution for ongoing coop protection. Directions for Use:Banshee is straightforward to use, only requiring a pressurised sprayer, such as a common ‘garden sprayer’ or ‘trigger sprayer’ found in hardware stores. The birds should be moved out of the area to be treated until the spray solution has dried. The product is added to water at the correct use rate depending on the type of sprayer used: 80ml per 5 litres of water for a garden sprayer, or 16ml per litre of water. 80ml per 100m2 of treated area if a more elaborate professional or commercial sprayer is being used. FAQs Is Banshee an insecticide? No, Banshee is not an insecticide as it is designed to repel mites away from poultry housing. Does Banshee smell?Banshee is made using an essential oil blend and has a characteristic odour which comes from the essential oils used. Some people like the odour, some people don’t. Will resistance develop with Banshee? It is very unlikely that resistance will occur due to its use as a repellent and the blend of essential oils used. How do I determine how much water my sprayer applies over 100m2?A typical ‘garden sprayer’ will apply 5L of water per 100m2 of treated area which would require a dilution rate of 80 ml Banshee in 5L of water, or 16 ml Banshee per litre of water. What do you mean by 'Don't spray past the point of run off'?Products such as Banshee should be applied as a fine spray, where the spray droplets are very small. Ideally these should cover the surface evenly, but not to the point where they pool together to form larger droplets on the surface. This is called the point of run off. If this occurs these larger droplets can run (vertical) or drip (ceilings) off the surface, and means too much spray has been applied. Does Banshee Kill Mites?Unfortunately, the terms of our registration exemption state that we can only talk about the use of Banshee as a repellent. We encourage people to purchase and try Banshee to draw their own conclusions. Does Banshee work on other mites, such as Tropical Fowl Mite and Northern Fowl Mite? Both of these mite species live on the birds themselves, so require a treatment directly onto the birds. We cannot recommend that Banshee is used in this manner. Technical Information: Banshee was developed by Renovo Technologies in response to a request from a commercial grower. The commercial grower continued to use Banshee with outstanding results on flock health. The success of Banshee has encouraged Renovo Technologies to make it available to a larger group of users in pack sizes which suit all scales of poultry farming, from small urban/lifestyle through to large commercial growers. Banshee contains no synthetic insecticides and is easy to use. It is available in the following pack sizes and configurations: 240mL pack with included measuring cylinder, which is sufficient for 15L of spray mix 5L pack for commercial growers and larger-scale operations Banshee Safety Data Sheet Banshee works by repelling red mites from poultry housing and, in the process, preventing mite infestations in the birds. The essential oil blend was specifically formulated to deter red mites from a treated area, based on extensive research and consultation with a commercial grower and veterinarians in New Zealand. As can be seen in the video below, red mites will actively stay away from any surface treated with Banshee. This is a result of the essential oils used and while they smell appealing to people, they are avoided at all costs by red mites. Red mites live on surfaces and in cracks and crevices and only migrate onto the bird to feed. If the mite harbourages in chicken housing are not attractive places for red mites to congregate then they move out and away from the birds. This reduces the ease of getting a blood feed from the birds and so reduces the egg laying from the female red mites.A repeated program of treatments should see the numbers of red mites lessen through attrition described above and eventually eliminate their presence form the chicken coop completely. Banshee has a number of benefits over other products which are used for red mites: Assessed to be exempt from regulations by the ACVM Safer with low toxicity from natural essential oils instead of harsh synthetic chemicals No crystalline silica, a cancer causing impurity found in diatomaceous earth Low residual product Applied to surfaces, not directly to the birds resulting in less stress on the birds

Refill For Dust Bath Bowl Kit | Appletons

    5 reviews

Chickens love to dust bath! Your Appletons Dust Bath Refill Kit includes: 1 cup calcium carbonate.1 x 1.5kg Fine Sand.1 cup Wood Ash.A dash of Medicinal Herbs (depending on availability can be lavender, lemon balm or mint). All chickens get clean by getting dirty 😊Just like a human bathtub, a dust bath is all about cleanliness. It’s not only chickens who like to hit the dirt – you may spot other birds such as sparrows and blackbirds taking a dust bath too. The dust or sand absorbs surplus moisture and oils on the skin. A dirt bath maintains the water resistance of the outer feathers of a chicken. It also deters parasites such as mites and lice by coating the insects’ breathing pores or simply driving them away. Dust bathing is an important part of keeping chickens healthy and clean. Once fully coated in dust or sand, the chicken will have a shake-down, just like a dog after a dip in a river. A quick preen of the feathers, and they’ll be all done and dusted. Literally. In addition to these physical benefits, dust-bathing is also thought to be mentally rewarding for hens. It helps them relax, and is a way of socialising too.Keep your hens mite and lice free with an Appletons Dust Bath Kit.

  • Appletons Pour On Drench 30ml dropper bottle Pour-on Drench Appletons

    Pour-on Drench 30ml

    65 reviews

Very effective for treating poultry lice. Used with great results in poultry circles as a reliable treatment for most internal and external parasites. Generally used for the treatment of poultry lice and scaly leg mite, but will also kill any red mites that try to suck off your chicken. It is a topical treatment applied directly to the skin of the bird. It is approved for use on other farm animals but has not been officially approved for use on poultry, hence the recommended 10 day withholding period for eggs (and 63 in NZ for meat). This little bottle will treat a good number of birds.Dosage rate is 0.1ml per 1kg live body weight.Approximately 60 treatments. (calculated on 60 brown shavers that weigh 2.5kg each )Available in a dropper bottle with a nozzle and cap for handy dosing. Helpful Notes. What are you treating your birds for? Worms?  We recommend using an approved wormer for treating worms in poultry. Our recommended choice for laying birds is Flubenol, as there is no withholding period for eggs. If treating birds that are not laying then Aviverm is easier to dose. Please note with Aviverm, there is an 8-day withholding period for egg consumption. If using pour-on drench, please note it does not kill all types of internal worms. We recommend following up treatment within the prepatent period of the particular worm you are treating for. Please read our informative blog on working chickens. Lice? If you are treating for external parasites, eg, a one-off treatment usually does the trick; however, if not all birds are treated and the hen house is not thoroughly cleaned (disinfected), then birds can reinfest quickly. For best practice, we recommend checking birds after 7 to 10 days and repeating the treatment as lice eggs can hatch in this period of time. We generally inspect (physical health check) our birds 2 to 4 times a year (usually when the seasons change) and treat them accordingly for lice. We find that the pour-on drench, when dosed correctly, works brilliantly for lice control.  Read our informative blog on treating lice. Important Considerations. Off-Label Use: Cydectin is approved for use in other farm animals like cattle and sheep, but does not have an official, scientifically tested withholding period for poultry specific to the label. The recommended periods for poultry are derived from New Zealand's default withholding periods for unregistered veterinary medicines in birds ensuring human food safety. Active Ingredient Accumulation: The active ingredient, moxidectin, is highly lipophilic (fat-loving) and accumulates in fatty tissues, including the egg yolk, which causes residues to persist for a longer period. Correct Dosage: It is crucial to use the correct dosage (applied to the skin, such as under the wing or on the back of the neck)  Egg Management: Eggs laid during the withholding period should not be eaten or fed back to the flock, as this can reintroduce the chemical into the birds' systems and prolong the withdrawal period. They can, however, be used for incubation. Don’t feed them to other animals, such as dogs, as residues may affect them too. Poison. Keep away from children. Please note this is a liquid and we cannot slip it into a courier satchel - it needs to be sent in a box.

Poultry Mite Coop and Bird Care

How To Beat Red Mite in Poultry Housing

Dealing with Red Mite in poultry housing involves a strict regime of cleaning, spraying, and powdering to break their breeding cycle. Key actions include removing all bedding, deep cleaning/spraying the coop with products like Poultry Safeguard or Smite Professional, and treating crevices with De-Mite Powder (Diatomaceous Earth). Red mites hide in crevices during the day and feed on birds at night, hence best to treat the housing, which will be the source of the infestation.
