Automatic Step-On Chicken Feeder for Bantams | Appletons

Description

Save time, money and reduce waste with our best-selling automatic bantam step-on chicken feeder!

Perfect auto feeder for all small poultry breeds:
Bantams, Hamburghs, Campines, Lavender Araucanas and pheasant

We have been so impressed with these Bantam Step-On Feeders for feeding our smaller ladies. 😊 The Pekin Bantams took to them quickly (little birds with high IQ's!) and now 16 years on they are still the perfect auto feeder for our smaller breeds. We are saving on feed as the sparrows just don't get the opportunity to help themselves any longer. PLUS we have been using them in our pheasant flights and they have been working well with the ringnecks, ornamental pheasants and our smaller ornamental ducks.

Benefits:

  • Perfect for 3 to 6 bantam-sized chickens: this feeder will need to be topped up more regularly if you keep a larger number of hens.
  • Suitable for all smaller sized fowl (Bantams, Hamburghs, Campines, Lavender Araucanas and pheasant)
  • This brilliant step-on auto bantam feeder holds approximately 4kg.
  • Hens are foragers and do best eating little and often throughout the day so feed on demand works best.
  • Reduces hierarchy in flocks ensuring all birds get enough feed which results in happy hens and better egg production.
  • Vermin-proof: Keeps out rats, mice and sparrows ensuring your poultry feed is not contaminated.
  • Keeps feed clean and helps to reduce the worm burden.
  • Ideal for busy people that are not always home early in the morning and late afternoon to feed their hens and those of us that go away for weekends.
  • Reduces feed wastage and saves money. Open feeders can lose up to 40% of feed to sparrows and other birds.
  • NZ made - supporting local NZ business
  • The unit is made from aluminium with alloy rivets, plated steel hinges, nuts and bolts so it keeps working in adverse weather.
  • Includes our very own Appletons training instructions which are clear and easy to follow. Training is very important and not to be rushed or shortened.
  • Chickens need to be POL and older for training.

Dimensions: Overall size of feeding unit is 390mm (width) x 160mm (height) x 320mm (depth). Aperture is app. 10cm.

          Pretty good

We bought this and its pretty good. Well made but we have found we have to place it on a platform in the coop which raises it a little so the treadle opens it enough for our bantams to get their heads in there. The training is going well.

Hi Louanne, thanks for sharing your experience. I’m glad the feeder is working well and the training is going smoothly. The 10 cm aperture should give bantams plenty of room to reach in and feed. If you place it directly on the floor of your coop, make sure there are no wood shavings under the treadle, as this can limit how far it opens. Your platform idea sounds like a great solution😊

          Great Feeder

This feeder is great quality. It arrived promptly with really good instructions. Our bantams are feeding from it - despite the lid still being open. We are only onto the second week of their 'training' and all going well so far. Looking forward to the time when they are able to operate it themselves so that we are no longer feeding the sparrows!

Two weeks on, Silkies are still not keen

Well made small unit. I have used a large one for years which the hyline hens are very adept at using. My silkies are proving to be very slow learners but I will persist.

          Pheasant step on feeder

Our recent order of 2 pheasant step on feeders are much deeper then the other two which we ordered awhile backwhich could be a problem for partridges . Have you changed the size? Otherwise they are great.

          Bantam step on feeder

Excellent service. Well crafted feeder, I can see that it will last for a long time. Really good clear instructions, even the pegs provided to hold up the lid while my guys get used to it, now that's service! My bantams seem to be getting the hang of it really fast. Thanks a lot.

          Happy hens now help themselves

It took my smartest hen only a week or two to jump onto the step then almost jump into the box as she is a small bantam but the big black bantam cross was quite suspicious. Probably the noise put her off. But now, 7 weeks later she places one claw, yes only one, on the step and as she’s tall leans in and east’s once smartie small bantam has gone! They are so funny and I’m relieved they can use this Sutton Feeder from Christchurch which Appleton’s in Nelson sent me

          Automatic feeder

Bantams got used to eating from it within 2 weeks. While I kept the lid open with pegs to begin, I put some cardboard on the sides to ā€˜force’ them to feed from the front.I’m saving money and the feed stays dry during any rain - great value for money!

          Bantam Auto Feeder

Bought one for our other chickens and it works a treat. Have inherited another bantam from a neighbour but our existing chickens won't accept her so she is free range in the backyard!
