Yes, we recommend giving shell grit to your hens and all seed-eating birds! We feed out Weston Layer Pellets to our laying birds, and the soluble calcium levels in this commercial feed are adequate for egg production with sound shells. However, for those birds that are in enclosed runs and do not have access to large areas of free range, we provide insoluble shell grit separately. The insoluble grit sits in the bird's crop for a sustained length of time, aiding in digestion, as well as giving 'slow-release' calcium, thus aiding in the production of good quality egg shells. Birds self-regulate their own grit intake as they require it. Plus, trace elements from the sea will be beneficial to their diet. Suitable only for POL pullets and all laying hens. At Appletons, we fill a small pot planter (or an old pottery dish with a hole in it) secured with a wire stake in the ground (so the birds don't knock it over!) with our fine shell grit. Don't forget to line it with weed mat to contain the grit so it does not all wash out! Ingredients: 100% crushed New Zealand oyster shell grit. Typical Analysis: Minimum calcium level: 37.1% Grit for Younger Birds? If your chicks are being fed a complete chick crumble from day one through to point of lay, you usually won’t need to add grit to their diet. If you start offering treats or greens from around 3 to 4 weeks of age, we recommend providing a calcium-free insoluble stone grit to help support healthy digestion. Avoid shell grit at this stage, as the extra calcium can be harmful to young chicks’ kidneys. Choose a fine, clean, local insoluble grit option. In New Zealand, many backyard poultry keepers use coarse river sand, coarse grit, or small crushed pea metal once young birds begin eating grains, seeds, treats, and mealworms. Another simple DIY option is to offer a small bowl of ‘garden’ dirt or provide a small dust bath bowl in the brooder. They will love this! But there are some cold weather locations where Mother Nature puts us to the ultimate test, with frigid snaps to make the hardiest hens shiver. For these conditions, Omlet designed the Eglu Pro Extreme Temperature Jacket. Filled with heat trapping, breathable material, it protects your chickens from the worst that winter can throw down. Easy to fit to your run with the supplied bungees (which can also be wrapped around the coop frame legs), simply pull the drawstrings tight for a perfect fit. With openings to the air vents on the back panel to ensure the coop stays as ventilated as always. The rear panel and the egg port remain accessible, as does the droppings tray. Just use the zips to open up, and tighten with the draw string once you want to close up the coop again. The same goes for the front door. For use on an Eglu Pro chicken coop with or without a run. We recommend only using the Extreme Temperature Jacket when the temperature outside is below freezing. You can still use your Autodoor Control Panel but please note that you will only be able to use it with Time Settings and not Light Settings due to the light sensor being covered. Alternatively, you can reposition your Control Panel and attach it to your run or to a nearby fence so that the light sensor is no longer shaded or covered.
