Choose The Perfect Toys For Your Budgie

Budgies need toys, so much so that they should be an essential part of your birds’ setup, only just behind food and water on the priority list. Toys provide them with physical and mental stimulation, as well as a lot of fun. Budgies love to fly, climb, jump, swing and flap, and to explore their environment using both beak and feet. As an owner you will need to make sure you provide toys that fulfil all of these needs. In the picture above we have packed the cage full with perches and toys, but it is usually better to stick to maybe two or three toys in the cage at a time and swap them regularly. You don’t need to get new toys every time as the budgie won’t remember what toys he or she played with two weeks ago, but variety is certainly the spice of life when it comes to budgie toys. Also, remember that budgies can and should have toys outside the cage for when they are free flying. Make sure everything you give your bird is safe; avoid anything sharp, things with gaps or hoops where a foot or a beak could get stuck, or that would be dangerous for the budgie to ingest bits of. After a while you’ll probably work out what toys seem to excite your pets the most, but you might have to try a few things before you figure it out. If it seems your budgies don’t like a toy you’ve got for them, it’s worth taking it away and reintroducing it a few days later. Your bird might very well be super excited about the same toy on a different day. We’ve filled a Geo Bird Cage with some of our favourite toys from the our shop that we know Sparkie (our home budgie) goes crazy for. Hopefully yours will too!

Perch Space

While perches are not always seen as toys, they are essential to any budgie set up. Without perches your pets will have nowhere to roost at night, but will also be deprived of a lot of entertainment. Sitting holding a wooden stick might not be your idea of fun, but birds love them, and you should always make sure you have a few perches in the cage.

Pops of Colour

Budgies have excellent colour vision, and colourful toys are normally a big hit. Maybe something like the Traffic Light Toy with its bright red, yellow and green turning balls...  It will look cheerful in the cage, and adds an interactive challenge for your budgie, who will also love playing with the attached bell.

Natural, Shreddable, Interactive Fun

The woven budgie hanging toys provide great entertainment and intriguing exploring for your budgies. Birds love to chew as they play, and these toys are designed to be durable but shreddable, mimicking the things the budgie might have played with in the wild. We’ve chosen the braided wreath with vine balls toy to provide our budgie with something colourful to swing in and climb on, as well as slowly break with his strong beak.
This is an awesome interactive toy our budgie loved his one. Spent hours and hours dismantling it.

Seed Bells

Your pet budgies will also love seed bells. Highly nutritious treats that also provide enrichment. Chewing on these treats will keep your bird/s entertained for hours. Topflite seed bells are handmade in Oamaru. The seed mix forms the base ingredients. These mixes are then handcrafted into a bell shape approximately 120mm high x 70mm wide (at base) Food grade edible adhesive is used to bind the seeds together.

Swings and Bells

Budgies love to swing and interact with bells. This natural swing bell from Trixie is the perfect size for a small bird and works brilliantly in the Geo Bird Cage. We have one for Sparkie, our budgie. He spends a lot of time on it, especially snoozing and chatting away to himself!

Natural Timber Swing

Keep your budgie busy and healthy by adding a cuttlefish. Top-quality sourced cuttlefish bone provides an essential source of natural calcium supplement for all birds. Calcium is an essential mineral that helps with bone formation, blood clotting and eggshell formation. Helps to keep beaks trimmed and sharp.

Last but not least are two of our budgies all time favourite activities: Bathing and chatting to himself in his mirror. Bathing is an essential part of plumage maintenance for birds; by dampening the feathers they loosen dust and dirt, making it easier to preen their beautiful feathers. The Geo bird bath has been custom designed for the angled sides of the Geo Bird Cage. Two hooks secure it in place and it’s super quick and easy to install and remove so you can keep the bath fresh and clean for your pets.

Like other birds, budgies love shiny things, and the Geo Bird Mirror is a fantastic cage accessory for them to enjoy. Your budgie will love the sparkling reflexions from the mirror, and be intrigued by the good looking chap in front of them! They can spend hours chatting to and preening the new roommate, and for lots of budgies, this is a great tool for mental stimulation.
The Geo Bird Mirror perfectly compliments the revolutionary Geo Bird Cage, which is also available with a tailor designed Bird Bath, Cage Cover and more. The Mirror is also available as a Half Hexagon which is ideal for use as a splash guard with the Geo Bird Bath.
