Here is some important information regarding when chicks need grit and how to provide it safely.

  • Starter feed only: Chicks do not need grit if they eat only standard commercial starter crumbles or mash, as this feed breaks down easily without it.
  • Added treats or greens: As soon as you offer bugs, scratch, veggies, or cooked eggs, they need tiny insoluble grit to help their gizzards grind the food.
  • Use the right size: Only use fine, chick-sized grit or clean, fine sand (like playground or river sand). Never use large adult poultry grit.
  • Avoid calcium grit: Do not use shell grit or anything with added calcium for young chicks, as excess calcium can harm their kidneys.
  • Do not overfeed: Place the sand or grit in a separate bowl. Remove it if you notice the chicks gorging on it instead of eating their regular food.
