Geese
A Top Notch Security Alarm System
Geese are a time-tested addition to the Kiwi homestead - low maintenance, tough as nails, and excellent grazers! These birds thrive on pasture, needing little more than good grass, clean water, and secure fencing to flourish. Beyond their rich meat and down, geese also make reliable guardians, sounding the alarm at anything unfamiliar on the land. Whether you're after a self-reliant meat source, natural lawnmowers, or a bit of old-fashioned charm around the paddocks, geese are a practical, productive choice for the lifestyle block.
Fun Facts!
Geese are fascinating, funny, and full of personality and here are some interesting and fun facts about them that might make you see these honkers in a whole new light!
- Geese are surprisingly intelligent and have excellent memories. They can remember faces for years - human and animal!
- A group of geese on the ground is a gaggle, in flight it's a skein or wedge, and on water it's a plump.
- Geese typically form strong pair bonds and stay with their partner for life.
- Domestic geese love grazing and can be used to keep lawns and orchards tidy naturally.
- Ganders take the role of protector seriously. They’ll hiss, flap, and even chase off threats (including humans!) to defend their family.
- Goslings can walk, swim, and feed themselves within hours of hatching.
- Goslings imprint on the first moving thing they see, often their mum, but if you’re there first, they may think you are their parent!
- Eggs in a clutch can hatch within a few hours of each other, even if laid days apart.
- Once a year, geese lose and regrow their flight feathers, becoming temporarily flightless - and often quite grumpy!
