Best to use the appropriate chick drinkers and feeders for rearing chicks. These are specifically designed to reduce wastage, cleaning and deaths.
If you are improvising, sometimes placing a few marbles or pebbles in the water dish can help, but chicks don’t think to walk around these open water dishes; they walk through them, thus making the brooder box and shaving wet.
