Know what to do to protect your birds from bird flu

Published 18th July 2026

Bird flu is a highly contagious viral disease that affects wild and domestic birds/poultry. If you own chickens, you can help keep them safe from diseases like bird flu by implementing good biosecurity practices. Being ready now will give you the best chance of protecting your flock from bird flu.

The best way to keep your birds safe
is to prevent them having contact with infected birds or contaminated materials and environments.

Key points:

  • Make enclosures bird proof (keep out sparrows and wild birds).
  • The enclosure will need a roof or cover, such as corrugated iron, plywood or a tarp.
  • Use water and feed containers that cannot be accessed by wild birds.
  • Buy wood shavings and feed from accredited sources.
  • Use water that has not been contaminated. (Mains tap water - chlorinated - or bore water)
  • Maintain good hygiene; wash hands, clean footware, dont share equipment.
  • Do not touch sick or dead birds.
  • Chicken and eggs remain safe to eat.
